The sheer amount of metal records that are released on a weekly basis make it nearly impossible to keep up with everything; it's inevitable that some very worthwhile efforts are going to get lost in the shuffle. Archetype of Chaos by Polish death veterans Trauma was nearly another casualty buried beneath an avalanche of .rar files, but managed to sneak onto my ipod and secure an attentive listen shortly before an 8-mile run. While these fine gentlemen have always been a second (or even third) tier act compared to the likes of fellow countrymen Decapitated, Vader, and Behemoth, they come blasting out in 2010 with both guns blazing, clearly intent on clawing their way to the next level.
Deftly alternating between slick technical riffing, pants-shitting solos, and good ol' fashioned chug-a-longs, Trauma is the very definition of modernized death metal. The production work on this record is astoundingly heavy and clear, making the tightly-executed vortex of... bullshit... really fucking...good. Fuck. I don't know. I seriously can't write like this. I sound like some dork from Amazon.com reviews or something. This record basically sounds like Organic Hallucinosis by Decapitated meets that last Deeds of Flesh record, so if you like that shit, get into it.
Speaking of trauma, would you like to hear a story about the time I hugged a kitten a death? I don't bring it up too often because it's obviously a horrible memory, and also makes me feel like some sort of defective Lenny-esque character from Of Mice & Men. But when I was very small our cat had kittens. As soon as they were old enough to leave their mom for a minute or two, me and my older sister started to dress them up in stupid outfits, drag them all over hell's creation, and generally just torture them with overzealous love. One beautiful summer day, I walked outside with a kitten in my arms, and declared that is was MY kitten. If memory serves me correctly, I believe that my sister tried to take MY kitten from me, in which case I freaked out and squeezed the kitten in a brutal bear hug. I swear on my life that it was an honest attempt to keep the poor thing safe from the maniacal hands of my eldest sibling, but it all went wrong. I hugged much too tightly, for much too long. The details are too gruesome and sad to share here, but believe me when I say that it was an exceedingly low point in my little four-year-old life.
I'm sure you all think I'm sort of awful retarded monster now, but I can assure you that I've come a long way since then, and haven't hugged a cat to death in nearly 29 years.
