A few years ago I fell on my right elbow for the hundred trillionth time (skateboarding) which resulted in the same ginourmous, swollen elbow that I always get. This time, I didn't clean it very well and several days later, my entire arm was red and swollen, with a baseball-sized bag of pus and blood nestled in my elbow. Even though I felt super shitty and delirious, I played a show with my band with my arm wrapped up in gauze (which made it much worse), and by the middle of the set I was babbling incoherently about absolutely nothing and basically falling apart. Then my friend Don drove me home and told me I had to go to the hospital because it was pretty clear I was going to die.
So I went to the Emergency Room and they looked at my elbow and said HOLY SHIT because I was all feverish and had a brutal blood infection going on in there. They pumped me full of vitamins and minerals, and got a bed ready for me because they needed to OPERATE. That night, the doctor came into my room with a huge needle, propped my arm up on a pillow, and said "you aren't going to like this." And I didn't, because he jammed that fucking thing into my elbow and sucked out about half a pint of muddy red pus to send to the lab. It sucked, but I felt a little better because some of the pressure was gone. Then I ate a couple of grapes and watched Night Court.
The next day, they knocked me out and put two big incisions in my elbow, one at the top of the bump and one at the bottom, and scraped out all the infected tissue and juices, leaving me with a deep-tissue abscess that needed to be packed with gauze. An old nurse guy stuffed it into both holes in my elbow with a pair of forceps, and told me that this would be the 'worst part', because they have to change the gauze daily. So every day for about a week, I'd have to go back and they would pull out all the gauze, which looked & sounded like spaghetti being yanked out of my arm. Then I got a bill for like a million dollars from the hospital because I didn't have insurance, which I didn't bother paying until it got sent to a collection agency.
And that is the story about the time I had INFESTED BLOOD.
Which, of course, is also the name of an insanely brutal death metal band from Brazil, which is perfect for people who enjoy the sweet sounds of Internal Suffering, Wormed, and Defeated Sanity.
